New snake species named after Guns N’ Roses guitarist Slash

Scientists have discovered a new species of nocturnal groundsnake in the forests of New Guinea and named it Lielaphis slashi in honor of Slash, the lead guitarist of Guns N’ Roses. The reddish-brown snake, which features an unpatterned back and a white or cream underside, was officially identified following genetic analysis that distinguished it from previously described species.

Lead author Sara Ruane of the Field Museum noted that the decision to name the snake after the musician was inspired by his long-standing advocacy for reptiles, zoos, and museums. Slash expressed that he felt “extremely honored and humbled” by the recognition. The species is the twentieth confirmed within the Lielaphis genus, which is primarily found on the island of New Guinea.
