New Sonic edge-detection technology debuts in India-New Zealand cricket series
New Zealand Cricket (NZC) has announced the debut of ‘Sonic’ technology as part of the Decision Review System (DRS) during the multi-format series between India and New Zealand. The New Zealand-designed technology uses advanced audio analysis to assist third umpires in determining whether the ball has made contact with the bat during reviews.
Virtual Eye, which has been ICC-accredited for ball-tracking since 2008, will provide the full suite of DRS technology, including this new edge-detection tool. The implementation follows extensive testing, validation, and independent assessment conducted in consultation with the International Cricket Council (ICC) and with support from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
The tour includes a five-match T20I series, five ODIs, and two Test matches. While the technology is being utilized for this series, any future applications remain subject to ongoing ICC accreditation and approval processes.
