New South Wales budget targets jobs, housing and post‑coal transition

Treasurer Daniel Mookhey will present the 2026‑27 NSW State Budget on 23 June, framing it as a baseline for the upcoming March state election. The budget seeks to secure thousands of jobs and new housing, especially in the Hunter and Central Coast regions, by fast‑tracking the repurposing of former mining land and establishing a Future Jobs and Investment Authority. Industry leaders warned the area faces a "once‑in‑a‑generation" economic turning point as coal output declines.

The fiscal plan revises growth expectations to 1 % and allocates $10.3 bn for health services, $2.1 bn for Sydney train maintenance and $557 m for energy‑efficiency upgrades for low‑ to middle‑income families. Revenue pressures include falling property‑related taxes and reliance on poker‑machine levies, projected at $3 bn by 2029. Mookhey emphasized tighter spending discipline while promising increased funding for regional schools, hospitals and roads.
