New South Wales confirms fifth H5 bird flu case

New South Wales authorities have confirmed a fifth case of H5 bird flu in the state. The case was identified in a dead Greater Crested Tern found on the South Coast, following reports from a member of the public.

This discovery marks the third confirmed case of the disease in an Australian native bird within NSW. Previous cases in the state involved deceased Greater Crested Terns found near Narooma and Wentworth.

NSW Agriculture Minister Tara Moriarty stated that the risk to the state's economy and human health remains low. The detection is expected to trigger heightened surveillance on the South Coast as the state coordinates with national monitoring and control efforts.
