New South Wales courts sentence men for courthouse brawl and knife possession

Two separate legal proceedings in New South Wales have resulted in sentencing for violent and prohibited behavior.

Nathaniel McFarlane Potts, 28, was sentenced to one year of imprisonment with a six-month non-parole period after pleading guilty to affray. The incident occurred on the ramp outside the Batemans Bay Courthouse, where security footage showed Potts hitting and kicking another man. During the encounter, Potts reportedly threatened to stab the victim. The court noted Potts' history of offending and his background of early exposure to violence.

In Wollongong, Brendon Sheffield, 36, was fined over $2,300 for multiple offenses involving the possession of knives and scissors in public. Sheffield was intercepted by police during proactive patrols in the central business district and later in Mangerton. During the encounters, police noted erratic behavior and suspected drug use. Sheffield claimed the kitchen knife found in his backpack was intended for cutting fruit.
