New South Wales detects five new H5 bird flu cases in wild birds

Five new cases of H5 bird flu have been detected in wild bird populations across New South Wales, including in Goulburn, Dee Why, Hawks Nest, Congo, and Moruya. The detected species include greater crested terns, a white-fronted tern, and a silver gull.

NSW Agriculture Minister Tara Moriarty stated that the virus has not been detected in commercial poultry flocks or captive birds, and the risk to human health remains low. The NSW Chief Veterinary Officer has advised poultry owners to house their birds where possible as a precaution.

The NSW Government has initiated a rollout of targeted vaccinations for vulnerable bird species and is maintaining strong surveillance. To date, 22 cases have been recorded in New South Wales and 282 in South Australia.
