New South Wales government funds Beaumont Street CCTV trial

The state government has committed $230,000 to fund a three-year CCTV trial on Beaumont Street in Hamilton. The City of Newcastle will manage the installation and lead the initiative.

The trial aims to address rising concerns regarding crime and antisocial behaviour in the busy suburban precinct. Local authorities noted that safety concerns intensified following the death of 22-year-old James Callahan on Beaumont Street in November 2024.

Premier Chris Minns stated that the government intends to provide police with responsible tools to maintain community safety and hold offenders accountable. Local representative Mr. Crakanthorp described the funding as a “must have” for public safety.
