New South Wales implements diverse affordable housing initiatives

In New South Wales, various initiatives are being implemented to address housing shortages and provide affordable accommodation. The NSW Reconstruction Authority has expanded its Homes Reuse Program, offering 50 additional homes acquired through flood buybacks in the Northern Rivers for reuse. These homes can be repurposed as affordable housing, crisis accommodation, or community facilities. Eligible organizations, including local councils and not-for-profits, can receive up to $135,000 per home to cover relocation costs.

In Lake Macquarie, a pilot project involving tiny homes at Belmont North is providing immediate accommodation for families. This partnership between Lake Macquarie City Council and the not-for-profit Allambi Care utilizes Council-owned land to explore alternative housing solutions. The homes were funded through the NSW Government’s Homes NSW Homelessness Innovation Fund to support vulnerable families and young people facing housing pressures.
