New South Wales launches firearm buyback scheme
New South Wales has commenced a firearm buyback scheme in response to the 2025 Bondi terror attack. The program allows eligible license holders to surrender excess firearms for compensation. Under the new regulations, most individuals are restricted to a maximum of four firearms, while primary producers and sporting shooters may hold up to ten.
Booking appointments began at six police stations, including Sutherland, Penrith, Narellan, Grafton, Griffith, and Dubbo, with more locations expected to join the rollout in December. While the government aims to reduce the number of weapons in circulation, some shooting groups and gun shop owners have expressed concerns regarding the economic impact of the crackdown.
Confusion has emerged among some license holders regarding the finalization of exemption rules. Police Minister Yasmin Catley noted that the government is conducting targeted consultations to address how individuals with genuine needs, such as farmers with multiple properties or elite athletes, might apply for additional allowances.
