New South Wales launches independent review of child murder case

The New South Wales government has announced an independent review into the alleged murder of a four‑year‑old boy whose body was found in a Wyong home on the Central Coast. The review, led by former NSW Children’s Court president Peter Johnstone, will examine whether the child should have remained in his mother’s care after previous safety reports, as well as issues such as the mother’s drug use, mental health and broader child‑protection system shortcomings. The government expects a final report by the end of 2026.

Police discovered the boy’s body after a 31‑year‑old woman triggered a welfare check at the property. The mother has been charged with murder, refused bail and will appear in court again in September. Authorities are also probing other aspects of the case, including reports of cannibalism. The Department of Communities and Justice confirmed it had prior contact with the family and is reviewing all relevant records. Community members held vigils to mourn the child and call for reforms.
