New South Wales launches review into unmarked communal graves
An investigation has revealed that hundreds of impoverished Australians, including war veterans, rough sleepers, and migrants, are being buried in unmarked communal graves. In New South Wales, specifically at Rookwood Cemetery in Sydney, authorities have been using stretches of earth to bury groups of four to six unrelated individuals together.
Families and supporters have expressed outrage, describing the practice as a disgrace. In several instances, relatives were not notified that their loved ones were being placed in communal plots, which may breach existing policies intended to prevent unnecessary distress.
In response, the New South Wales government has committed to an urgent review of the practice. Health Minister Ryan Park stated the department is exploring reforms, such as emulating a Victorian model that provides individual plots and markings for approximately $3,000. Independent Senator David Pocock has called on Prime Minister Anthony Albanese to address the issue at the national cabinet to establish uniform standards for dignified burials across all states and territories.
