New South Wales lifesavers launch 2026/27 patrol season

More than 22,000 volunteer lifesavers in New South Wales have commenced the 2026/27 patrol season, marking the return of red and yellow flags to beaches across the state. The patrol season is scheduled to run from late September through April 2027.

Authorities are implementing several technological upgrades to enhance public safety. This includes a $50 million investment in drone-based surveillance covering more than 90 beaches and a $120 million shark management program. New Tagged Shark Listening Stations have been installed in Sydney Harbour to provide real-time notifications via the SharkSmart app. Additionally, a 14-month trial of AI cameras is underway at specific sites in Little Bay and Kiama Blowhole to monitor rockfishing safety.

The season begins following a period of significant coastal fatalities. Officials are urging the public to swim between the flags and follow all lifeguard directions, noting that recent drownings occurred primarily at unpatrolled locations or outside of designated safe zones.
