New South Wales political battle erupts over gun buyback laws

A political dispute has emerged in New South Wales regarding proposed gun buyback legislation announced by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Premier Chris Minns. The measures follow the Bondi massacre and include previous restrictions that limited firearms to four per individual and ten for primary producers and sporting shooters.

NSW Opposition Leader Kellie Sloane has criticized the buyback, labeling it “bullshit” and accusing the government of using the policy as a “smokescreen for their inaction” on social cohesion and community safety. While the Liberal Party previously supported firearm caps, the party has since withdrawn its bipartisan support, marking a shift in the political landscape regarding gun control consensus in Australia.
