New South Wales signs $560 million Free TAFE agreement
New South Wales has become the first Australian state or territory to sign a new Free TAFE agreement with the Commonwealth. The deal secures a $560 million joint investment intended to expand the skilled workforce.
Starting in 2027, the five-year partnership will provide approximately 160,000 free training places across the state. The initiative focuses on critical sectors including housing construction, energy, digital technology, and essential care services such as nursing and aged care.
The agreement aims to provide long-term stability to the vocational education system and reduce financial barriers for individuals entering priority industries. It also includes provisions to upskill under-represented groups to address existing workforce shortages.
