New South Wales students begin 2026 HSC exams
More than 60,000 students in New South Wales began their 2026 Higher School Certificate (HSC) examinations with English Paper 1. While many students initially feared difficult or unexpected essay questions, educators and students reported that the exam was accessible.
Section one of the exam featured short questions based on unseen texts, including an extract from Lang Leav’s poetry collection, ‘Soon It Will Be Sunday’. Students were asked to analyze themes such as resilience and varying attitudes toward success. In section two, students faced a 20-mark essay regarding their prescribed texts.
