New South Wales to mandate reporting of motor neurone disease

New South Wales is set to become the first jurisdiction in Australia to make motor neurone disease (MND) a notifiable condition. Under the Public Health Amendment (Motor Neurone Disease) Order 2026, medical practitioners, hospitals, and laboratories will be legally required to report diagnosed cases to NSW Health.

This mandate aims to improve the understanding of the disease by tracking data such as patient age, gender, occupation, and location. Health officials believe this rigorous monitoring, typically used for infectious diseases, will help researchers identify potential environmental triggers or geographic clusters, as approximately 90 per cent of MND cases occur sporadically without a known genetic link.

MND is a progressive neurological disorder that causes the rapid degeneration of muscle activity, eventually impairing a person's ability to walk, talk, and breathe. While there is currently no cure, officials state that the registry is a practical step toward developing better preventative measures and treatments.
