New Stroke Research Highlights Inflammatory Mechanisms and Treatment Advances
Recent research underscores stroke’s status as the world’s second leading cause of death and a major source of long‑term disability. Standard diagnostic tools such as non‑contrast CT imaging remain essential for distinguishing ischemic from hemorrhagic strokes, while acute treatment focuses on rapid reperfusion through intravenous thrombolysis and mechanical thrombectomy, followed by multidisciplinary unit care and rehabilitation.
A separate study of patients with large‑vessel occlusion revealed a hyperacute immune response in the cerebral circulation. Within hours of stroke onset, elevated interleukin‑1β (IL‑1β) and neutrophil extracellular trap formation were detected, implicating IL‑1β as a key inflammatory mediator. Multi‑omics analysis of blood drawn directly from the occluded artery showed activation of classical monocytes and neutrophils, suggesting new therapeutic targets for early intervention.
