New Taipei City begins Tongxing Road highway crossing project

New Taipei City Mayor Hou You-yi inspected the commencement of the Tongxing Road project, a major infrastructure development designed to alleviate traffic congestion in the Shehou area of Xizhi. The project involves constructing a 290-meter road that passes beneath National Highway 1 via an underground tunnel to connect Fude 2nd Road with Kangning Street.

The project faced previous delays due to the financial issues of the original contractor, leading the city government to terminate the contract and re-tender the work. The new phase of construction, which officially began on October 15, has a total budget of 1.239 billion TWD.

Once completed, which is targeted for March 2029, the road is expected to provide alternative north-south routes, reducing the heavy reliance on Zhongxing Road. The construction also includes preparations for the Xidong MRT line to ensure integrated regional transport development.
