New Taipei City mayoral race intensifies as President Lai endorses Su Chiao-hui
President Lai Ching-te has publicly endorsed Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) New Taipei City mayoral candidate Su Chiao-hui. During a series of events in Xinzhuang, Lai expressed his desire to see a mayor in New Taipei City who can cooperate effectively with the central government to ensure national stability.
Su Chiao-hui has proposed several initiatives, including a “Dual City Cultural Festival” to strengthen ties between New Taipei and Tainan, and plans to integrate New Taipei’s manufacturing base with semiconductor and AI industries. She also aims to establish an International Convention Center and promote cooperation in drone and space industry supply chains.
In response to campaign developments, Kuomintang (KMT) mayoral candidate Lee Shih-chuan challenged Su regarding a disputed NT$5.41 billion MRT construction subsidy. While Su claimed that no funds would be lost, Lee questioned why the central government has not released the funds immediately if they are guaranteed, urging Su to use her coordination skills to secure the budget for ongoing engineering progress.
