New Taipei City Shuangxi District Magnitude 5.6 Earthquake Felt Across Northern Taiwan

A magnitude 5.6 earthquake struck Shuangxi District in New Taipei City on the night of 26 July 2026. The Central Weather Bureau recorded a depth of 95.7 km and identified the event as a deep‑focus quake caused by the subduction of the Philippine Sea Plate beneath the Eurasian Plate.

The quake was strongly felt across northern Taiwan, with a maximum intensity of level 3 reported in New Taipei, Taipei, Yilan, Taoyuan, Hsinchu, Hualien, Miaoli and Taichung. Nationwide mobile alerts were issued, and the Taipei basin’s geology and high‑rise building resonance amplified shaking in the densely populated area. Public transport, including several Taipei Metro lines, briefly halted before safety checks allowed services to resume.

The Weather Bureau warned that aftershocks of magnitude 4.5–5 could occur over the next week, though they are expected to be less intense at the surface. Residents were advised to remain prepared for further tremors.
