New Taipei Court sentences man to life for double murder of wife and sister-in-law

The New Taipei District Court has sentenced Xie Wen-hsiung to life imprisonment for the double murder of his wife and sister-in-law. The incident occurred in Tucheng, where Xie used a vehicle to strike the victims before attacking them with a knife and an aluminum rod. Medical reports indicated the victims suffered multiple severe wounds, including penetrative injuries to the neck and lungs.

While the victims' families requested the death penalty, citing the brutality of the attack and the defendant's disregard for the law, the court ruled that a death sentence could not be applied. The court stated it could not prove a premeditated continuous killing plan or a high risk of future recidivism, nor could it prove a lack of possibility for rehabilitation.

In addition to the life sentences for murder, Xie received three months for injury and 59 days of detention for violating a protection order. The ruling has drawn public criticism, including from internet personality Cheap, who questioned the legal reasoning regarding premeditation and the potential for future parole.
