New theatrical productions explore human-AI relationships
Two new stage productions are examining the intersection of artificial intelligence and human identity through different comedic and dramatic lenses.
In Carbondale, Illinois, the Marion Kleinau Theatre is presenting ‘AI Robot,’ a student-led project directed by Associate Professor Johnny Gray. The play utilizes a minimalistic set with digital backgrounds to present an anthology of sketches. The production explores themes of agency, self-determination, and societal responses to rising AI technology through pop culture references.
In Los Angeles, the play ‘Bobby Robotowitz’ is being performed at two locations: Pico-Robertson and Silver Lake. Directed by Casey Stangl, the comedy follows a struggling writer’s relationship with an AI chatbot. The production aims to observe how large language models reflect human nature and the vulnerability humans face when interacting with such technology.
