New therapies show promise for treating hypertrophic cardiomyopathy

Recent clinical data presented at the European Society of Cardiology Congress highlight new therapeutic approaches for hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), a condition affecting approximately one in 500 people.

In a Phase 3 trial published in the New England Journal of Medicine, the drug aficamten (Myqorzo) demonstrated significant improvements in exercise capacity and health status for patients with symptomatic nonobstructive HCM. The study, which involved 517 patients, met its primary endpoints by showing improvements in peak oxygen uptake and clinical summary scores compared to a placebo.

Additionally, Phase 2 data for an experimental oral medication, EDG-7500, was presented. Developed by Edgewise Therapeutics, this selective cardiac sarcomere modulator is designed to target both obstructive and nonobstructive forms of the disease. Unlike current treatments that primarily address the obstructive form, EDG-7500 aims to slow early contraction velocity and improve relaxation without compromising the heart's overall pumping function.
