Beijing researchers identify new tick-borne virus ALTNV

Researchers in Beijing have identified a previously unknown tick-borne virus named Asian longhorned tick nairovirus (ALTNV). The study, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, was led by the State Key Laboratory of Pathogens and Biosafety.

The discovery addresses a long-standing clinical mystery where approximately 30% of patients exhibiting symptoms of Severe Fever with Thrombocytopenia Syndrome (SFTS)—typically caused by the Dabie virus (DBV)—tested negative for DBV. ALTNV belongs to the genus orthonairovirus within the family Nairoviridae.

Genetic analysis revealed that ALTNV proteins share less than 80% amino acid similarity with other known species in the same genus. In a study of 3,163 patients, 10.4% tested positive for ALTNV. Patients infected with the virus often presented with flu-like symptoms, including fever, fatigue, and gastrointestinal issues.
