New tools and research aim to improve autism accessibility and understanding

New initiatives are being introduced to improve accessibility and research capabilities for individuals on the autism spectrum.

In Australia, Aspect Autism Friendly has partnered with the historical attraction Sovereign Hill to launch a Video Visual Story. Featuring actor Michael Theo, the video provides a first-person guided walkthrough of the visitor experience, from ticket purchasing to exploring the township. The tool aims to reduce anxiety and uncertainty by allowing autistic visitors to see and hear what to expect before their arrival.

In the United States, researchers at Boston University have developed an inclusive video game designed to measure how people with autism perceive and interpret information. Led by Benjamin Scott, the project aims to include individuals with severe or non-verbal autism who are often excluded from traditional research. By observing how players interact with the game's mechanics, researchers hope to better understand perceptual deficits and assist in the development of new therapies and support strategies.
