New traffic enforcement systems implemented in Italy and Slovenia

Travelers in Italy and Slovenia face new automated enforcement systems on several highway sections.

In Italy, certain stretches of the motorway have transitioned to a ‘Free Flow’ toll system. Instead of traditional barriers and toll booths, cameras and sensors capture license plates as vehicles pass under portals. This system is currently active on specific routes, including the A33 between Asti and Cherasco, the A21racc between Ospitaletto and Montichiari, and sections of the A36, A59, and A60 near Como and Varese. Drivers who fail to pay the toll in a timely manner risk fines of up to 344 euros.

Slovenia has implemented a ‘Section Control’ system on four major highway stretches to monitor average speeds. Unlike traditional radar that captures instantaneous speed, this system calculates speed based on the time taken to travel between two points. This makes brief braking before a camera ineffective. The monitored sections include the A1 between Logatec and Vrhnika, the A2 between Ljubljana Brod and Vodice, the A2 between Grosuplje and Ivančna Gorica, and the A1 between Podmilj and Ločica near the Trojane tunnels. Violations can result in fines of up to 1,200 euros.
