International study sets new ultrasound standards for arthritis diagnosis

An international multicenter study published in Lancet Rheumatology has established new ultrasound standards to improve the early diagnosis of inflammatory arthritis. The research, coordinated by Professor Maria Antonietta D’Agostino and Professor Andrew Filer, analyzed over 28,000 joints from 802 healthy volunteers across 13 countries.

By defining specific ultrasound thresholds based on age and joint type, the study allows clinicians to better distinguish between normal age-related joint changes and the earliest signs of inflammatory disease. This development aims to reduce the risks of both delayed diagnosis and overdiagnosis in healthy individuals.

Early detection is considered critical in managing autoimmune conditions like rheumatoid arthritis, as prompt intervention during the ‘window of opportunity’ can prevent irreversible joint damage and improve long-term patient outcomes.
