New underwater expeditions to explore ocean and freshwater ecosystems

A new series titled ‘Blue Planet III’, narrated by David Attenborough, will utilize advanced camera technology such as splash drones and remote underwater cameras to document underwater wildlife. The series aims to showcase stories of adaptation and resilience across five key habitats: Tropical Seas, Open Ocean, Seasonal Seas, Polar Waters, and The Deep.

In a separate expedition, a historic real-time livestream will explore Superior Shoal in Lake Superior, an underwater mountain rising 300 metres from the lakebed. Using underwater drone technology from Boxfish Robotics, researchers aim to determine if the shoal serves as a critical refuge for biodiversity. The mission, broadcasting from the Research Vessel Blue Heron, seeks to document rare species like the deepwater sculpin and giant lake trout, while potentially uncovering shipwrecks in the area.
