New university rectors sworn in at UNSA and Unachi
New leadership has taken office at two major universities in Peru and Panama.
In Arequipa, Peru, Richard Paredes Orué was sworn in as the rector of the Universidad Nacional de San Agustín (UNSA) for the 2026-2031 term. During his inauguration, Paredes Orué pledged a policy of ‘zero corruption’ and stated that any actions regarding political factions within the university would be based on technical reports from legal and administrative experts. He also met with the mayor of Arequipa to discuss urgent requests for the university community.
In Chiriquí, Panama, Absel Navarro assumed the role of rector at the Universidad Autónoma de Chiriquí (Unachi). Navarro called for a vote of confidence from students, faculty, and the national government, emphasizing transparency, accountability, and academic strengthening. A primary challenge for his administration will be addressing the university’s budget situation and resolving delays in staff salary payments.
