New VBoy Color emulator adds color to Nintendo Virtual Boy games

A new open-source emulator called VBoy Color is bringing limited color palettes to the Nintendo Virtual Boy library. Originally released in 1995, the Virtual Boy utilized a red monochrome display to achieve stereoscopic 3D effects, a design choice that contributed to its limited commercial success with approximately 770,000 units sold.

The VBoy Color emulator uses a tile-based approach, assigning one of four colors to every 8x8 pixel block. This technique allows classic titles like Jack Bros. and Vertical Force to feature distinct color schemes for characters and environments. The emulator is compatible with desktop operating systems, Android devices, and Meta Quest VR headsets. On Meta Quest, the software maintains the console's original 3D stereoscopic effect, whereas the desktop and mobile versions do not provide the same depth perception.

While the original hardware was often criticized for causing eye strain due to its red-and-black palette, this software project aims to revitalize interest in the console for its dedicated fanbase.
