United States marks 25th anniversary of 9/11 attacks with memorials and policy shifts

As the world marks the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks, various commemorations and policy shifts are occurring. In the United States, President Donald Trump is attending a ceremony at the Pentagon to honor military and defense heroes, while Vice President JD Vance represents the administration at Ground Zero in Manhattan. The New York City ceremony, which includes former presidents Joe Biden, Barack Obama, George W. Bush, and Bill Clinton, will not feature political speeches. New York City also held a drone light show, '2,977 Lights Over New York Harbor,' to visually represent each victim.

In a significant policy move, the Trump administration has removed several Al Qaeda recruiters and financiers from the U.S. designated terrorist list. This action coincides with the decision to remove the Syrian government, led by Ahmad Al-Sharaa, from the state sponsors of terrorism list.

Commemorations are also being held globally. The FDNY held a memorial on Staten Island for the 343 firefighters lost in the attacks and hundreds more who later died from related illnesses. In Canada, the legacy of Operation Yellow Ribbon is remembered, and the United Nations has issued statements honoring the nearly 3,000 victims from over 90 countries.
