New York advances community infrastructure in Brownsville and Staten Island

New York has announced significant developments for community infrastructure in Brooklyn and Staten Island. In Brownsville, a new $128 million multi-service center has been completed two years ahead of schedule and $10 million under budget. The 60,000-square-foot, all-electric facility features office spaces, conference rooms, a community garden, and green roofs. Designed by Marvel, the center emphasizes sustainability, aiming to meet or exceed LEED Gold certification through solar panels and recycled materials.

The center also features a large-scale public art installation titled ‘I Am Protected’ by artist Jazmine Hayes. The work includes pieces such as ‘In my mother’s garden’ and ‘I am divinely guided,’ which utilize upcycled materials and historical symbols like cowry shells to connect with the community.

In Staten Island, Governor Kathy Hochul has committed $15 million to establish a permanent Community Justice Center. The facility will be housed in a former criminal courthouse at 67 Targee Street. The center is intended to serve as a neighborhood hub, coordinating services such as mental health support, substance use counseling, housing assistance, employment referrals, and youth diversion programs. The goal is to provide a centralized, trauma-informed location where government agencies and nonprofit partners can collaborate to support residents.
