New York allocates $76 million for rural health initiatives

New York State has launched the $76 million Rural Community Health Integration Initiative, which will distribute 90 awards to 56 organizations across the state. More than $28 million of this funding is specifically designated for the Catskills region.

Announced by Governor Kathy Hochul, the initiative aims to build a more sustainable rural healthcare system by investing in partnerships, infrastructure, and the healthcare workforce. The first of a five-year program, the funding will support projects such as improving care transitions for patients with mental illnesses or substance use disorders and addressing healthcare workforce shortages.

According to New York State Department of Health Commissioner Dr. James McDonald, the initiative is designed to improve care coordination, strengthen regional healthcare networks, and increase service access through both planning and implementation activities.
