New York announces 5 GW nuclear energy expansion plan
Governor Kathy Hochul has announced an ambitious plan to add 5 gigawatts of new nuclear capacity to New York’s energy grid, a move intended to bolster reliability and provide low-carbon power. This initiative, referred to as the ‘Nuclear Reliability Backbone,’ would more than double the state’s current nuclear footprint from 3.4 GW to a projected 8.4 GW.
The expansion is structured in two phases: the New York Power Authority (NYPA) will develop at least 1 GW of advanced nuclear capacity in Upstate New York, while the remaining 4 GW will be managed through a separate procurement process by the Public Service Commission. Eight Upstate communities have already expressed interest in hosting the new facilities.
Financial projections for the first 5 GW of capacity range from $15.4 billion to $23.9 billion over the first 25 years of operation. However, analysts suggest the program could generate annual benefits between $2.89 billion and $3.94 billion by 2050 through avoided fuel costs and economic activity. To qualify for federal tax credits, projects must begin construction by 2033.
