New York Archdiocese to pay $800 million for clergy abuse claims

The Catholic Archdiocese of New York has reached an agreement to pay $800 million to settle claims from approximately 1,300 individuals who allege they suffered sexual abuse by members of the clergy and lay leaders. The settlement, which is expected to be formalized in early November 2026, follows a period of litigation that could have otherwise led the archdiocese into bankruptcy.

Archbishop Ronald Hicks stated that the agreement aims to provide a degree of healing and reconciliation for survivors. Under the terms, claimants may choose a minimum payment of $250,000 or potentially higher compensation based on the severity of the reported abuse.

This settlement is one of the largest of its kind in the United States, surpassed only by an $880 million agreement reached by the Archdiocese of Los Angeles in 2024. The legal actions against the archdiocese have been facilitated by laws that extended the statutes of limitations for reporting historical abuse.
