New York Archdiocese to pay $800 million in sexual abuse settlement

The Catholic Archdiocese of New York has reached an $800 million settlement with approximately 1,300 survivors of clergy sexual abuse. The agreement follows years of litigation triggered by the 2019 New York Child Victims Act, which extended statutes of limitations for survivors to file civil claims.

Under the terms of the settlement, plaintiffs may choose a lump-sum payment of at least $250,000 or potentially receive a larger award, with individual claims to be evaluated by a judge appointed by the victims' attorneys. The agreement also requires the Archdiocese to release documents regarding offenders and maintain a public, updated list of credibly accused clergy on its website.

Archbishop Ronald Hicks described the settlement as an opportunity for healing and reconciliation. The deal, which requires unanimous consent from the claimants, is scheduled to be signed during the week of November 6. This settlement is one of the largest in U.S. history, surpassed only by the Archdiocese of Los Angeles.
