New York Archdiocese to pay $800 million to sexual abuse survivors

The Archdiocese of New York has reached an $800 million settlement with approximately 1,300 individuals who alleged they were victims of sexual abuse by priests and lay staff during their childhood. The agreement aims to resolve long-standing litigation triggered by the New York Child Victims Act, which extended the statute of limitations for such claims.

Under the terms of the settlement, survivors can choose between a rapid one-time payment of at least $250,000 or a larger indemnity following an analysis of their specific claims. To fund the settlement and avoid potential bankruptcy, the Archdiocese has implemented budget cuts, reduced personnel, and sold several high-value properties.

Archbishop Ronald A. Hicks stated in a letter to local parishes that the resolution is intended to promote healing and reconciliation. While the settlement provides a path for compensation, the Archdiocese noted that the financial measures required to fund the settlement may impact parish life.
