New York art and luxury auctions show market volatility
The spring art auction season in New York City, featuring major houses Christie’s, Sotheby’s, and Phillips, saw total earnings of $1.4 billion. This represents a 22 percent decrease compared to the $1.8 billion recorded in 2023.
Market indicators suggest a period of flux and nervousness. Some blue-chip works by artists such as Jeff Koons, Andy Warhol, Pablo Picasso, and Salvador Dali failed to meet their low estimates. Despite these trends, a Picasso from 1932 achieved a winning bid of $139.4 million.
In the luxury watch sector, a Cartier Cheich in white gold set a record as the most expensive Cartier and most expensive quartz watch ever sold, fetching $3.4 million. However, experts note difficulty in predicting price stability for brands like F. P. Journe and A. Lange & Söhne, amid debates over whether market values are driven by tangible rarity or marketing hype.
