New York authorities arrest suspects in burglary and elder fraud cases
Authorities in New York have made arrests in two separate criminal investigations involving theft and fraud.
A 49-year-old man from Brooklyn has been charged in connection with more than a dozen residential burglaries in New Canaan. The investigation, which utilized license plate readers, security footage, and cell phone data, linked the suspect to multiple break-ins, including several second-floor entries. One reported burglary on Ponus Ridge resulted in the theft of approximately $122,000 in jewelry and watches. Other thefts involved significant amounts of cash, foreign currency, and gold.
In a separate case, the Tarrytown Police Department and the Greenburgh Drug and Alcohol Task Force arrested Benny Cai following an investigation into an organized elder fraud scheme. The scam involved impersonating Apple’s financial department through text messages to gain remote access to an elderly resident's computer. The perpetrators manipulated the victim's screen to simulate a $50,000 accidental deposit and subsequently demanded cash returns. The suspect was apprehended while attempting to collect a second fraudulent payment.
