New York cannabis sales surge during Knicks championship and World Cup
Data from the New York Office of Cannabis Management indicates that cannabis sales in New York surged during significant sporting events, including the New York Knicks' championship run and FIFA World Cup matches.
Sales of cannabis products increased during 15 of 19 total sports playoff games compared to average daily sales. Specifically, sales rose by 30% during the Knicks' championship parade on June 18. Other notable spikes included a 19% increase in marijuana sales during Game 3 of the Knicks' championship series at Madison Square Garden, and a 12% increase during the first finals game against the Spurs.
Additionally, legal cannabis sales saw an increase during the World Cup final held at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.
