New York City administration skips oversight hearing on pied-à-terre tax

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s administration has declined to attend a City Council oversight hearing regarding the rollout of a new pied-à-terre tax on luxury second homes. Instead of appearing in person, administration officials plan to submit written testimony, citing ongoing litigation related to the tax as the reason for their absence.

City Council Speaker Julie Menin criticized the decision, stating that oversight is an essential government function and noting that previous mayoral administrations have testified despite active lawsuits. The move has drawn criticism from various political figures, including Democratic Council members Eric Dinowitz and Kevin Riley, who argued that the administration is avoiding transparency and accountability following a flawed implementation of the levy. Republican Councilman Frank Morano also condemned the decision as disrespectful to the public.
