New York City clears homeless encampment near NYU dorms

New York City officials recently cleared a homeless encampment located near NYU dormitories at East Ninth Street and Third Avenue. Following the removal by NYPD and sanitation workers, the occupants relocated to a new site approximately 100 yards away.

The incident highlights the ongoing debate surrounding Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s approach to the city's homeless crisis. Under current policy, police are generally prohibited from clearing encampments for at least one week to allow city outreach workers to offer services to individuals. While the administration recently clarified that the NYPD can still respond to 311 complaints, the policy emphasizes social service intervention over immediate removal.

Some individuals living in the encampments expressed a preference for street living under the current administration, noting that previous policies involved more aggressive property removal by police. However, the presence of these shantytowns near university housing and public spaces remains a point of contention for city officials and residents.
