New York City commemorates 25 years of resilience at Ground Zero

Twenty-five years after the September 11 attacks transformed the Manhattan skyline, Ground Zero has evolved into a symbol of urban resilience and cultural rebirth. The site now features new skyscrapers and significant memorial spaces, including two large pools located where the North and South Towers once stood. These pools contain the largest artificial waterfalls in North America and are surrounded by more than 400 oak trees.

Among the symbols of recovery is the ‘Survivor Tree,’ a pear tree recovered from the World Trade Center debris. Survivors like Peter Bitwinski, who worked on the 69th floor of the North Tower, continue to engage with the site’s history; Bitwinski now leads free walking tours every Tuesday to honor the memory of the victims.
