New York City delivery workers protest Delivery Protection Act
Delivery workers and small business owners rallied outside New York City Hall to protest the proposed Delivery Protection Act. The legislation, supported by Mayor Zogran Mamdani and City Council member Tiffany Cabán, aims to prohibit major companies like Amazon from using third-party contractors for last-mile deliveries. Proponents of the bill argue it will increase worker safety and wages by forcing Amazon to directly employ the approximately 5,000 delivery workers currently operating under subcontracted models.
Opponents of the bill, including the New York Delivers Coalition, argue the mandate could jeopardize thousands of jobs and force small logistics companies to shut down. Business owners and drivers expressed concern that the law would destroy their livelihoods, noting that many workers belong to minority communities. Amazon has previously stated that such legislation would lead to increased delivery costs and slower package delivery speeds.
