New York City DOT faces uncertainty over 'Stop Super Speeder' program launch
New York City Department of Transportation Commissioner Mike Flynn has declined to provide a firm launch date for the 'Stop Super Speeders' program, despite a City Council proposal to begin implementation by May 27, 2027.
During a recent hearing, Flynn cited implementation challenges involving software and back-end systems that are dependent on external partners. While he promised that some elements or testing might be in place by the proposed date, the lack of a definitive timeline has drawn criticism from city officials and safety advocates.
The program, which aims to install speed-limiting devices in vehicles belonging to the city's most frequent speeders, is considered a significant victory for street safety advocates. Council members and representatives from Transportation Alternatives expressed concern that delays could prolong the danger posed by reckless drivers in local communities.
