New York City expands curbside EV charging network
Brooklyn-based company it's electric has been selected by the City of New York and the New York Power Authority to develop a permanent curbside electric vehicle (EV) charging network across all five boroughs.
The initiative, known as PlugNYC, aims to expand the city's current 88 Level 2 charging points to approximately 700 over the next three years. This expansion is designed to support residents and drivers who lack access to home-based charging by providing accessible power in dense, street-parked neighborhoods.
The charging hardware will be manufactured locally in Queens by Boyce Technologies. The project involves multiple partners, including Maverick Corporation for engineering and construction, and SWTCH Energy, which will provide the software platform. The network will support EVs as well as optional e-bike and cargo-bike electrification at certain sites. Charging will be metered by kilowatt-hour and managed via apps or tap-to-pay, with the city maintaining price control to ensure affordability.
