New York City faces backlash over second-home tax rollout

New York City officials and residents are debating the implementation of a “pied-à-terre” tax, an annual fee targeting second homes worth more than $5 million or condos and co-ops valued above $1 million. The rollout has sparked controversy following the release of a list containing nearly one million properties, which included the addresses of high-profile residents and celebrities.

During a recent City Council oversight meeting, council members expressed conflicting views on the policy. While some supported the tax, others raised concerns regarding its execution. Council Member Kamillah Hanks criticized the public nature of the property list, describing it as a “hit list of the haves and the have-nots” and suggesting it could pose security risks for homeowners.

The Department of Finance maintained that the personal and address information released is already public data that the administration is legally required to provide annually. The city has issued tax notices to approximately 17,000 individuals.
