New York City identifies 9/11 victim using genetic genealogy
New York City authorities have achieved a forensic breakthrough by identifying a victim of the September 11, 2001, attacks using genetic genealogy. This marks the first time the technique, which combines DNA analysis with family tree research, has been successfully applied to the World Trade Center identification efforts.
The identification was a collaborative effort between the New York City Office of the Chief Medical Examiner and the NYPD Detective Bureau. The victim, an adult woman, has not been publicly named at the request of her family. This identification brings the total number of formally identified World Trade Center victims to 1,654.
Officials noted that the technology required for this method did not exist at the time of the attacks. Dr. Jason Graham, the city’s chief medical examiner, described the development as a “breakthrough” that helps fulfill the city's commitment to providing answers to families. Forensic anthropologist Dr. Jennifer Odien indicated that the process is promising, noting that approximately 47 DNA profiles are currently being reviewed and may be suitable for further identification through this method.
