New York City intensifies e-bike enforcement amid rising fatalities

New York City is experiencing a surge in both illegal e-bike enforcement and fatal micro-mobility accidents. NYPD data shows that through the first eight months of 2026, e-bike violation tickets increased by 55% compared to the previous year, with e-bike seizures rising to 973 vehicles, more than double the 415 seized during the same period last year.

This crackdown follows a series of fatal incidents. In a single week, three cyclists were killed in separate hit-and-run accidents across Brooklyn and the Bronx. These fatalities have intensified public pressure on Mayor Mamdani to regulate high-speed e-bikes, which are illegal if they exceed 25 mph. While the Mayor has issued cease-and-desist orders to major retailers like Amazon and Walmart, advocacy groups for delivery workers warn that increased enforcement disproportionately impacts the livelihoods of approximately 70,000 workers, many of whom are immigrants.

The City Council is currently considering 17 bills to establish a new regulatory framework for e-bikes to balance road safety with the economic needs of the delivery sector.
