New York City Jewish leaders express concern over Mayor Mamdani
New York City Jewish leaders have expressed growing concern over deteriorating relations with Mayor Zohran Mamdani. During recent meetings, leaders reported that the Mayor’s rhetoric regarding Israel is causing harm to many Jewish New Yorkers.
Since assuming office, Mamdani has taken several actions that have unsettled the community, including revoking the previous administration’s adoption of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance’s definition of antisemitism. He also vetoed school safety legislation supported by major Jewish organizations and recently referred to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as a ‘war criminal,’ calling for the enforcement of International Criminal Court arrest warrants.
These tensions occur amid a rise in local hate crimes; reported anti-Jewish incidents increased by 8.5% through July compared to the previous year, accounting for more than half of all reported hate crimes in the city.
